About this Month's Guest Lecturer

Kamran M. Riaz, MD, is Clinical Professor, the Thelma Gaylord Endowed Chair in Ophthalmology, Vice-Chair for Clinical Research, and Director of the Stephenson Refractive Surgery Center at the Dean McGee Eye Institute, University of Oklahoma. His clinical and surgical practice focuses on cornea, cataract, refractive surgery, and complex anterior segment reconstruction, including secondary and scleral-fixated IOL surgery, iris reconstruction, and the management of cataract and anterior segment surgical complications.

Dr. Riaz received his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine, completed his ophthalmology residency at Northwestern University, where he served as Chief Resident, and completed cornea fellowship training at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.
He has authored more than 120 peer-reviewed publications and 24 book chapters and has delivered more than 125 presentations at national and international meetings. His academic interests include optical biometry, IOL power calculation, refractive cataract surgery, corneal disease, and surgical innovation. He co-developed the Cooke-Riaz-Wendelstein (CRW1) Index, an algorithm designed to help identify prior laser vision correction using modern optical biometry, and in 2026 was elected to the IOL Power Club, becoming the youngest American ever elected to membership.

Dr. Riaz serves as Chair of the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Basic and Clinical Science Course Section 3, Clinical Optics and Vision Rehabilitation. He is Chief Editor of Optics for the New Millennium and Associate Editor of Clinical Atlas of Anterior Segment OCT, and he serves in editorial and educational leadership roles across multiple ophthalmology journals and organizations.. His contributions to education have been recognized with several institutional and national teaching awards, as well as the 2023 American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award.
