About this year's Krill Lecturer

Dr. Jacque L. Duncan earned her medical degree (1995) at the University of California-San Francisco, where she also completed an ophthalmology residency in 1999. Dr. Duncan then completed a medical retina fellowship in 2000 at the Penn Medicine Scheie Eye Institute in Philadelphia, PA, where she focused on patients with age-related macular degeneration and inherited retinal degeneration. She joined the UCSF faculty in 2000.

In her research, Dr. Duncan is studying treatments to preserve vision as well as devices to stimulate visual perception. She has received research funding from Research to Prevent Blindness, the Karl Kirchgessner Foundation, Hope for Vision and the American Geriatrics Society, in addition to receiving a Career Development Award from the Foundation Fighting Blindness. She leads an NIH-funded translational vision science laboratory focused on adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (AOSLO) imaging of human photoreceptors to discover mechanisms of cone death in inherited retinal degenerations. In addition, Dr. Duncan’s group is studying changes in cone structure and function during disease progression and testing the efficacy of treatments that aim to slow progression. She also serves as principal investigator on a number of clinical trials of treatments and natural history of disease progression in inherited retinal degenerations including retinitis pigmentosa and Usher syndrome.
